Obituary

Donald P. Butch Brownell, 78, of Carbondale, PA., died Thursday morning, April 14, 2011 at Mercy Hospital, Scranton, PA. He was the husband of the former Lillian Stawisky. They were married May 10, 1957. Born July 23, 1932 in Carbondale, PA., he was the son of the late Mark and Mabel (Bell) Brownell. He was a graduate of the Benjamin Franklin High School, Carbondale and was an Army veteran having served as a lieutenant colonel with the Pennsylvania National Guard, 28th Infantry Division for 33 years. He was a co-founder of BGM Fastener, Honesdale, PA. and later founded Sparkling Pure Water Company, Carbondale, which he operated from 1986 to 2009. He was a former Lackawanna County Detective, former member of the Carbondale Housing Authority, former member and coach for the Carbondale Little League, member and Past Commander of the American Legion, Post 221, Carbondale and a member of the Elkview Country Club, Crystal Lake, PA. One of Butch's greatest joys was playing Santa to area children in hospitals. Butch was extremely proud of his grandchildren and his great sense of humor will be missed The family would like to thank the staff of of the special care unit at Mercy Hospital for their kindness and compassion. He is survived by one daughter: Linda Zefran and husband Dr. James of Browndale, PA.; one son: David Brownell and wife Joan of Carbondale, PA.; five Grandchildren: Nathan and Lauren Brownell, Katie and Lauren Zefran and Dr. Marissa Nacinovich; one great granddaughter: Piper Brownell; three sisters: Beverly Miccolizzi of Waymart, PA., Carol Gentile of Ocala, FL. and Judith Goyette of Honesdale, PA.; one brother: Charles Brownell of Daytona Beach, FL.; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sons: Steven Brownell and Donald Brownell, II.; six brothers: William, Chester, Richard, Neil, Allen and David Brownell; three sisters: Betty Malasics, Jane Perhne and Mary Bryant. The funeral was held Saturday, April 16, 2011 at 11:00 AM from the Carmine J. Louis C. Parise Funeral Home Cremation Services, Inc., Farview and 41st Streets, Carbondale, with Rev. John Sorochka, pastor of St. John's Russian Orthodox Cathedral, Mayfield, PA., officiating. Interment with military honors, St. John's Russian Orthodox Cemetery, Mayfield, PA. Pallbearers: Nathan Brownell, George Wallis, Gene Connor, Joseph Vadella, Joseph Bianco, William Farber, Peter Goyette and Fran Gardus. Friends called Friday, April 15, 2011 from 4 to 8 PM. Parastas took place at 5:00 PM. Memorial contributions were sent to the Steve Brownell Scholarship Fund, c/o Dr. James Zefran, 1214 Texas Palmyra Highway, Honesdale, PA 18431.
