Dominick E. Spike Mazza, age 74, of Carbondale, PA. died Saturday night, July 19, 2003 at home after a 2 year battle with pulmonary fibrosis. His wife is the former Margaret Peggie Connor. They recently celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary on June 24th.
Born July 3, 1929 in Carbondale, PA. He was the son of the late Nicholas and Virginia (Moro) Mazza.
He was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, Carbondale. He attended Benjamin Franklin High School, Carbondale, class of 1947. He was a United States Army Veteran, who served with the 11th Engineer Combat Battalion in Korea.
He owned and operated the Hotel Pennvale, Carbondale for over 30 years. Also, during his working lifetime, he was a Labor Foreman for the Builders and Trade Union 130, Tax Assesor for Lackawanna County, Building Inspector, Zone and Code Enforcement Officer for the city of Carbondale and Attendance Officer for Carbondale Area Elementary Schools.
He was active in local, county and state politics. He was a life member of the Carbondale Chapter of UNICO National and served two terms as President. He was also a member of the VFW, DAV, Mitchell Hose Company and the former Caruso Social Club. He was past President of the KIWANIS Club, former Commander of the American Legion Post 221 and social member of the Moxie Club, all of Carbondale. He was Constable of the city of Carbondale and Chairman of the 115 Legislative District.
He was a loving husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, brother and uncle. He was deeply devoted to his family, friends, and community. He was an avid boxing fan.
The Italian Heritage Scholarship which is awarded annually by the Carbondale Chapter of UNICO National will be known now as the Dominick Spike Mazza Italian Heritage Scholarship in recognition of his many years of outstanding service to UNICO and the community.
He is survived by one son: Nick Mazza and wife Denise of Carbondale, PA.; two daughters: Cynthia Mazza of Thornhurst, PA. and Michele Hill and husband Bruce of Carbondale, PA.; 5 Grandchildren: Maria Mazza Ruby of Eynon, PA., Nicholas and Cody Mazza of Carbondale, PA. and Dominick and Sarah Marion of Carbondale, PA.; one sister: Rose Gerace of Brooklyn, NY.; one brother: Michael Mazza of Greenfield Township, PA.; 2 Aunts; Nieces, Nephews, and Cousins
The funeral was held Thursday, July 24, 2003 at 8:30 am from the Carmine J. Louis C. Parise Funeral Home, Inc., Farview and 41st Streets, Carbondale, with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 am in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 15 Fallbrook Street, Carbondale, celebrated by Rev. Russell Motsay, pastor. Interment, Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Greenfield Township.
Friends called Tuesday, July 22, 2003 from 7-9 and Wednesday, July 23, 2003 from 2-4 7-9. Military services were conducted by the Carbondale Area Veterans. Pallbearers: Chris Mazza, Phillip Mazza, Charles Mazza, Thomas Connor, Jonathan Connor and Jeffrey Connor, all nephews.
