Delbert N. Updyke, 97, a resident of Pocono Tranquil Gardens, East Stroudsburg, PA and formerly of Swiftwater, PA, died Monday, June 16, 2014 at the assisted living facility. He was preceded in death by three wives, the former Laraine Evelyn Krill who died in 1968, the former Alma Gregonis who died in 1992 and the former Rosemary Powell who died in 2010.
Born August 9, 1916 in Endicott, NY, he was the son of the late Walter and Elsie Dietrich Updyke.
He grew up in Greenfield Township and attended Greenfield Township schools and was a graduate of the Carbondale High School. Prior to his retirement, he had been employed by the Bell Telephone Company in New Jersey for many years. He was an active member of the Bell Telephone Pioneers, a former member of the Clifford Baptist Church and a member of the Greenfield Township Historical Society.
He is survived by two sisters: Elinor Redfern of East Stroudsburg, PA and Dora Amos of Roebling, NJ; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three brothers: Willard, Walter and baby Don Jay Updyke; two sisters: Amabel Machell and Rita Stovel.
The funeral was held Friday, June 20, 2014 at 11:00 am from the Joseph J. Pula Funeral Home, 23 N. 9th Street, Stroudsburg, PA with Pastor Deborah Loessy, of the Clifford Baptist Church, officiating. Interment, Willow View Cemetery, Clifford, PA.
Friends called Thursday, June 19, 2014 from 4-7 PM at Pula Funeral Home.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Shifler-Parise Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Clifford, PA.
