Obituary

David L. Krantz, 78, of Carbondale, PA, died Saturday, January 16, 2021 at the Forest City Nursing Home, Forest City, PA, after a brief illness. Born September 30, 1942 in Carbondale, he was the son of the late Ferdinand and Natalie Goode Krantz. David had been raised by and resided with his two late aunts, Mary Krantz, a former Carbondale public school educator and Gertrude Krantz, a former principal of the Benjamin Franklin High School, Carbondale. David was a 1961 graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School, Carbondale, where he served as managing editor of the yearbook staff. In 1965 he enlisted in the United States Air Force where he was assigned to Bergstrom AFB, Austin, TX, as a material faculty specialist. After being discharged from the military, he enrolled in Kings College, Wilkes Barre, where he received a bachelor degree in history in 1974. While at Kings, he was senior class president, year book editor, a member of the journalism fraternity, Pi Delta Epsilon, was the first student to address his graduating class and also wrote a photographic essay book, "The Trouble with Agnes", which documented the 1972 Agnes Flood's devastating effects on the area. He later worked for the Democratic Research Unit of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. As a research analyst, he was assigned to the Urban Affairs Committee, the Subcommittee on Third Class Cities and Counties and the Mine and Energy Management Committee. He was also an assistant to former State Representatives Bernard O'Brien, Camille George and Thomas Caltagirone. At the time of his retirement, he served as the executive director of House Judiciary Committee. Active in local politics, he was the 1980 Democrat candidate for 114th district of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and in 1984 was a candidate for the Democrat nomination of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives 115th district. He had also served as campaign treasurer and publicity chairman for former Carbondale Mayor Charlotte Moro. He was a devout catholic, a member of St. Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale, and the Knights of Columbus, Council 329. In retirement, he and his sister enjoyed traveling. As a descendant of the family the founded the former Fell Brewery in Simpson, David was an avid collector of beer cans and amassed one of the largest collections within the Brewery Collectibles Club of America, of which he was a member. He is survived by several cousins. He was also preceded in death by a sister: Ellen T. Krantz on December 3, 2020. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, January 23, 2021 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Church, 6 North Church Street, Carbondale, concelebrated by Rev. Michael Lombardo, pastor of Our Lady of Consolation Church, Wayne, NJ, Rev. Edward Casey, pastor of St. Ann's Church, Shohola, PA and Rev. Jeffrey Walsh, pastor of St. Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale. Interment, Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Greenfield Township, PA. Arrangements were entrusted to Edward A. Wade Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., Carbondale, PA.
