David R. Barnes, 69, of Carbondale, PA, died Tuesday, August 11, 2026 at the Carbondale Nursing Center, after a courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, the former Mary Ann Misura.
Born July 9, 1957 in Carbondale, PA, he was the son of the late Robert and Violet Morgan Barnes.
Dave was a retired Correctional Officer with the Federal Bureau of Prisons. He began his career at USP Lewisburg before transferring to FCI Otisville and ultimately finished the final chapter of his career at USP Canaan.
In his free time, David loved being surrounded by family and friends. His love for sports was unmatched, and he was a diehard New York Yankees and Las Vegas Raiders fan. David also enjoyed giving back to his community. He was a dedicated Regular Member of the Moxie Club and a proud Son of the American Legion.
Throughout his life, David held many titles, husband, father, and best friend but the title he cherished most was grandfather.
David loved unconditionally and was known for his infectious smile and unmistakable, hearty laugh. Through both his career and his friendships, he touched the lives of countless people and left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
On August 11, 2026, Heaven gained another angel. Although he will be deeply missed, David's memory, kindness, and love will forever live on in the hearts of the family, friends, and loved ones he leaves behind.
He is survived by two sons: Robert Travers and wife, Rachel of York, PA, and Peter Barnes and wife, Sarah of Fell Township, PA; two grandsons: Peter Barnes, II. and Rhys Travers; one sister: Cathy Sue Loyack and husband, Gary of Olyphant, PA; his mother-in-law: Anna Misura of Carbondale, PA; nephews and niece: Andrew Loyack, Aaron Loyack and Tarra Malecke, whom he considered his daughter, along with several other nieces and nephews.
