Obituary

Charles A. Scavo, 78, of Carbondale, PA, died Thursday evening, January 2, 2014 upon arrival at the Mid Valley Hospital, Peckville, PA. He was the husband of the former Gloria Gillott. The recently celebrated 50 years of marriage on October 26th. Born March 23, 1935 in Carbondale, PA, he was the son of the late Anthony and Anna Balzano Scavo. He was a graduate of the Benjamin Franklin High School in Carbondale and the Johnson Trade School in Scranton, PA. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Scranton and his master's degree from Millersville State College. He also attended Temple University. He was a veteran of the Korean War having served in the Air Force. Prior to his retirement in 1999, he had been employed as an industrial arts teacher at the Carbondale Area School District for 36 years. He had also worked at Takach's Grove in Greenfield Township, PA for several years. He was an active member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Carbondale where he was one of its first Eucharistic Ministers. He served on the church's implementation team during the diocese's parish restructuring and was a current member of its finance committee. He was active with many of the parish's annual social functions. He was an avid golfer and in his younger years had been an avid bowler. He is survived by two children: Charles Scavo, Jr. and Atty. Cheryl Scavo both of Alpharetta, GA; one sister: Catherine Cerra of Greenfield Township, PA; one brother: Thomas Scavo and wife Joan of Carbondale, PA; four nieces. He was preceded in death by his brother-in-law: Thomas Cerra. The funeral was held Monday, January 6, 2014 at 8:30 AM from the Carmine J. Louis C. Parise Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., Farview and 41st Streets, Carbondale, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 AM in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 15 Fallbrook Street, Carbondale, con-celebrated by Msgr. David L. Tressler, pastor and Rev. Andrew Gallia, former pastor. Interment with military honors, Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Greenfield Township, PA. Pallbearers: Mark Totsky, Thomas Didato, Paul Pisarcik, Attorney Thomas Farley, P.J. Gillott, Jr., Albert Fortuner, Joseph Grizzanti and Michael Dombrosky. An honor guard was provided by the retired and current faculty and staff members of the Carbondale Area School District. Friends called Sunday, January 5, 2014 from 4-8 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions were made in Charlie's name to his beloved parish, Our Lady of Mt.
