Obituary

Carmella A. Chellino, age 97, a resident of Harrogate Life Care Facility, Lakewood, NJ., and formerly of Carbondale, PA., passed away on Thursday, February 26, 2009, after a brief illness.Born in Carbondale, PA., she was the fifth of ten children of the late Salvatore Sam and Jenny Chellino, owners of the former Hotel Chellino in Carbondale, PA. Carmella was a graduate of Kings County Nursing School and served in World War II aboard hospital ships returning wounded veterans to the United States from the European Theatre of Operations. She was discharged from the Army as a Captain in 1945. After service, she worked for the Veterans Administration for 32 years. Her initial assignments involved setting up the new veterans hospitals in Albany, NY, Staten Island, NY and finally East Orange, NJ. She was an instructor in Nursing Education at Seton Hall University and with the Veterans Administration. She retired from the Veterans Administration in 1977. After retirement, she moved to the Viewmont Apartments, Dickson City, PA. While there, she did private duty nursing. In 1982, she moved to Leisure Village in Lakehurst, NJ., where she truly enjoyed her retirement as she was an avid golfer and bowler. In 1997, she moved to Harrogate Life Care Facility in Lakewood, NJ. She is survived by two sisters: Anna Hanchak of Carbondale, PA. and Mildred Koch of the Forest City Nursing Home, Forest City, PA.; many nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by four sisters and three brothers.The funeral was held Monday, March 2, 2009 at 9:00 AM from the Carmine J. Louis C. Parise Funeral Home Cremation Services, Inc., Farview 41st Streets, Carbondale, PA., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 AM in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 15 Fallbrook Street, Carbondale, PA. Interment in the family plot with full military honors was held at Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Greenfield Township, PA. Pallbearers: Joseph Maggio, Michael McHale, P.J. McGovern and Harold McGovern. Friends called Sunday, March 1, 2009 from 5-7 pm.
