Obituary

Brian D. O'Brien, 52, of Carbondale, PA, died Wednesday, December 10, 2025 upon arrival at Geisinger Community Medical Center, Scranton, PA, after being stricken ill at work.

Brian was born February 22, 1973 in Paterson, NJ, and grew up in Forest City, PA, where he graduated from Forest City High School. For the past 18 years, Brian was as a dedicated employee at Keystone Sanitary Landfill in Dunmore, PA, as a heavy equipment operator.

Brian enjoyed the outdoors especially spending time on the family property in Thompson, PA. He liked 4-wheeling with his step-son, Robert, his buddy, Wayne Phillips and others. A perfect night for Brian was having drinks by the bonfire with his family and friends. Brian was proud of his body art and enjoyed sharing his talents as a tattoo artist with others. He also had a special place in his heart for animals.

Family and friends will remember Brian for his kindness, generosity, and willingness to help others in need. But for Brian his most important role in life was being a devoted family man and the best papa. He cherished the time spent on family camping trips and vacations.

Brian faced many hardships in life but the most challenging was being a cancer survivor. With fortitude he went to work every day to support his family while battling the pain and exhaustion of his illness and treatments. He was a true warrior.

The family is grateful to his co-workers who were with him during his medical emergency. Their selflessness to preform life saving measures until emergency personnel arrived will never be forgotten. Special thanks are also extended to Dr. Lisa Thomas and staff for taking such good care of Brian during his battle with cancer.

He is survived by his loving wife of 16 years and together for 28 years: Rose Ransom O'Brien; his mother: Donna Sandford O'Brien; his two step children whom he raised as his own: Robert Ransom and fiancée, Patricia Phillips and Kayla Strackbein and wife, Brittany; his adoring grandchildren: Lily, Raelyn, Ellie and Kennedy whom Brian was patiently waiting her arrival in March; one brother: Lenny O'Brien and wife, Lorie; two sisters: Samantha Dolph and Annette Perry and husband, Chris; his mother-in-law: Rose Gallinot; his brother-in-law: Patrick McDonald; his sister-in-law: Kim McDonald; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.

Brian was blessed to have several special friends in his life who were by his side through both good and bad times, they include Scott Stoll, Mark Liuzzo, Mike Murphy and Tina Ondrako.

He was preceded in death by his father: William L. O'Brien; a brother: William John O'Brien; a nephew: William Dolph; along with his grandparents, and several aunts and uncles.
