Armand J. Bevacqua, 83, formerly of Dundaff Street, Carbondale, PA., died Thursday morning, January 10, 2008 at the Carbondale Nursing Home, Carbondale.
He was the husband of the former Rita J. Barkosky, of Forest City, PA. They celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary on December 19th.
Born June 22, 1924 in Carbondale, PA., he was the son of the late Joseph and Loretta (Ferreri) Bevacqua.
He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Carbondale and was a 1942 graduate of the Benjamin Franklin High School in Carbondale and also was a pitcher on its baseball team. He was a proud Army veteran serving in World War II as a medic. He served in England, France, Belgium, Luxemburg and Germany and earned the EAME Theater Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star, American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. While serving in the military he acquired the nickname, Army Bivwack. He was a member of the VFW Post 4712 in Simpson and its golf league. He loved playing golf and played until he was 82 and won the league's first half championship with his partner at that age.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a salesman at Sugerman's Eynon Drug, working in the camera and appliance departments. He made many friends and acquaintances while working there. Prior to working at Sugermans, he was employed for 15 years as a trackman for the DH Railroad. One of his biggest enjoyments was coaching Little League Baseball. He was one of the founders, past president and treasurer of the Carbondale Pre-Teen Park Association. His name is still on the deed to the current Little League Baseball stadium in Carbondale. Many men in Carbondale and elsewhere remember playing baseball for his Green Street Little League teams.
He loved being with his family and especially enjoyed the family Christmas Eve get togethers. He loved his grandchildren and will be deeply missed by his family. The family would like to thank everyone at DeVita Dialysis, Childs and the Carbondale Nursing Home, especially the B wing nursing staff and aides.
He is survived by one son: Joseph A. Bevacqua and wife Mary Beth of Justus, PA.; one daughter: Gina Bomba and husband Michael of Jermyn, PA.; three granddaughters: Melissa Bevacqua and Emily and Mia Bomba; Numerous Nieces Nephews. He was preceded in death by one son: Dominick Bevacqua; five brothers: Dominick, Anthony, Thomas and Henry Bevacqua and William Marsico; three sisters: Rose Arcuri-Bambara, Mary Mesiti and Catherine DeGrazia. The funeral was held Tuesday, January 15, 2008 at 9:00 AM from the Carmine J. Louis C. Parise Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., Farview 41st Streets, Carbondale, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 AM in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 15 Fallbrook Street, Carbondale, celebrated by Rev. Russell E. Motsay, pastor. Entombment, Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Greenfield Township, PA.
Pallbearers: Francis Wilce, Renford Wilce, Scott Bevacqua and Joseph Bevacqua. Military horors were provided by the VFW Honor Guard, Post 4712, Simpson.
