Anne E. McDonough Lawler, 74, of Carbondale, PA, died Wednesday, November 2, 2022 during brief stay at the Carbondale Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, after a courageous battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband, Martin F. Lawler, retired superintendent of the Carbondale Area School District. They were married on August 21, 1971.
Born May 15, 1948 in Carbondale, PA, she was the daughter of the late Attorney James G. and Mary C. Evans McDonough. Anne was a 1966 graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School, Carbondale, she received her bachelor's degree in elementary education from Bloomsburg State College in 1970 and a master's degree in education from Marywood College in 1974. She taught elementary education, primarily 5th grade, for 34 years in the Carbondale Area School District. After retirement, Anne continued to serve and educate children as the Prevention of Blind Specialist for the Lackawanna Blind Association.
She was a member of St. Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale, The Carbondale News Club, and the former St. Joseph's and Marian Community Hospital Auxiliary. She was also active in both the Fell and Carbondale Elementary PTA and a member of the Pennsylvania and National Education Associations.
She loved her family and was very proud of the accomplishments of her sons and always looked forward to and adored the time she spent with her granddaughters.
The family would like to thank Dr. Kishori Veerabhadrappa and staff at Hematology and Oncology Associates of NEPA in Dunmore, and Dr. Meghan Haggerty and staff at Northeast Radiation Oncology Center in Dunmore for their kind and compassionate care.
She is also survived by two sons: Martin G. Lawler and wife, Jonelle of Greenfield Township, PA, and Michael J. Lawler of New York, NY; two granddaughters: Elyanna and Marin Lawler; nephews and niece: Gregory Pilewicz, Kara Pilewicz Iaconis, Atty. John Lawler and Patrick Lawler; several great-nieces and great-nephews, cousins and many friends.
She was also preceded in death by a brother: Atty. James G. McDonough, II.; and a sister: Eleanor McDonough Wenger.
The funeral was held Monday, November 7, 2022 from the Edward A. Wade Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 4 Morris Place, Carbondale, PA, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. from St. Rose of Lima Church, 6 N. Church Street, Carbondale, PA, celebrated by Rev. Seth Wasnak, pastor. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton, PA.
Viewing hours were held Sunday, November 6, 2022 from 2-5 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions were sent in Anne's name to either, the Lackawanna Blind Association, 228 Adams Avenue, Scranton, PA 18503 or the Carbondale YMCA, 82 N. Main Street, Carbondale, PA 18407
